Unite! Research School: A European week to foster research synergies

Seminar Research, Partnerships, International
Unite! Research School 2024
From 14 to 18 October 2024, Grenoble's Unite! team hosted the first PhD seminar of the European alliance. The event, held in Grenoble and Autrans, brought together 180 PhD and Masters students, as well as researchers from the 9 Unite! European universities and members.

A PhD school and five strategic themes

With the aim of launching a European Unite! PhD school to offer students involved in the alliance joint courses, training and co-tutored theses between the partner universities, the program for this first edition of the Unite! Research School was dedicated to research and training through research.

Over five days, participants were immersed in expert talks, lectures and case studies on five strategic themes: Artificial Intelligence, Industry 4.0, Sustainable Electronics, Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage, and Nuclear Engineering.

Grenoble's technological and scientific ecosystem

With one day devoted to meetings with industrial partners, participants also discovered Grenoble's technological and scientific ecosystem through visits to laboratories and industries such as ILL, CEA, Schneider Electric, LPSC, G2ELab and the S.Mart technology platform. Another highlight was the “Learn Repair Café” workshop organized by the GreenChips-EDU Consortium.

According to Franz Bruckert, Unite's strategic delegate in Grenoble, “Unite Research School is a particularly innovative event, as it's the first time we've organized an international week dedicated to research between students, PhD students and teachers from Unite alliance member universities!"

This particularity enabled the students to really immerse themselves in the world of research. It gave them a better understanding of how a scientific career is built up, and of the challenges and difficulties of doctoral studies in the medium term before becoming researchers.

A network is born

This was followed by a poster evening, during which students presented their research projects in the form of pitches. The best presentations were awarded certificates to the applause of the audience.

After this week of exchanges and sharing, everyone returned to their respective countries, but the exchanges will continue: the network is born.

These European universities work closely together on over 80 European projects, and more than 4,000 students have participated in mobility programs within the alliance. Unite! builds on thirty years of close and committed collaboration between the different partners, covering many aspects of higher education, research, innovation and social responsibility.
The alliance's partners share a common vision based on technology transfer and science and engineering education through complementary multidisciplinary approaches. With over 80 staff and students involved in this alliance, the Unite! Grenoble team leads various thematic working groups in the field of education and research.
